New Legislation Offers Significant Benefits to U.S. Veterans

Last year, bipartisan legislation was introduced that promises to improve the quality of life for millions of veterans and their families. This new law, known as the Veterans' Compensation Cost of Living Adjustment Act (COLA), passed the U.S. Senate and is now headed to President Joe Biden's desk for his signature. If you are a veteran or have a family member who is, it is critical that you understand how this legislation could positively impact your financial situation.

As detailed from the official website of the U.S. Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, the Veterans' Compensation Cost of Living Adjustment Act seeks to ensure that veterans' disability compensation rates remain aligned with the rising cost of living.

This is especially important at a time when prices for essential goods, such as housing and food, are steadily rising. The released statement clarifies that this compensation adjustment is designed to provide veterans with the financial stability they deserve, recognizing their sacrifices and contributions to the country.

Specific benefits of the Veterans Act

The new legislation not only focuses on disability compensation. It also provides for adjustments to other essential benefits, such as:

Disability compensation: an increase in the rates veterans receive for service-connected disabilities.

Clothing allowances: improved benefits for those veterans who need assistance in purchasing clothing due to their disabilities.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation: improved benefits for surviving spouses and children of deceased veterans.

These increases will be based on the annual COLA adjustment that applies to Social Security benefits, meaning that they will be adjusted each year according to the Consumer Price Index. Implementation of this law is expected by December 1, 2024. Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester made clear the importance of this legislation by noting that it provides “absolute certainty” to veterans at a time of increasing economic pressure.

With this adjustment, veterans and their families will be able to enjoy greater financial peace of mind, knowing that their benefits will keep up with economic needs. Meanwhile, Senator Jerry Moran spoke about it in the aforementioned portal. “We have a responsibility to provide care and support to our nation's veterans.”
